Today I mostly drove and avoided the food because I'm still sick.

Ifty Patel and I joined a UN fact-finding tour of some volunteer sites on the south coast. We visited a coast watchers effort run by the Norwegian Relief Council, a Greek volunteer rescue unit nicknamed "The Pirates" because the are a rough looking bunch and absolutely fearless. We then moved to a small Gre...ek fishing village. The people there have been rescuing and welcoming refugees almost entirely on their own for more six months with very little outside help. They just took it upon themselves to get the job done.

When we arrived, they had just brought in about 100 who had been stranded in the ocean when they ran out of gas. Later tonight, I took them 2000 paper cups from our supply and they had rescued another boat which was sinking with no loss of life. What magnificent people!

I spoke briefly with some folks with Samaritans Purse who are doing something somewhere by themselves. For some reason, they got defensive and stand-of fish when I mentioned that the registration at Tapatika seemed to be going well. I don't know why. Other than a team from the Orthodox Church, I saw no other Christian groups. It was embarrassing.

I also saw nothing from the US government. No AID supplies, no Navy hospital ships, no Marine shore teams or Army helicopters like we regularly see in other crises. Nothing at all. We are simply not involved in the greatest humanitarian crisis since WWII. We spent trillions of dollars starting and/or mismanaging the wars these people are fleeing, yet refuse to lift a finger to help the people whose lives we destroyed.

For the first time in my 66 years, I was ashamed of being an American.
