Bailey Family letter-- August , 2017

Hello Baileys!

John Bailey here (of the Jim Bailey clan), sending warm greetings from Philadelphia. It is the first Friday in August, and I hope this prayerful message finds you all well. (And if I've left anyone off this email, please send this along to them on my behalf.) I moved here last summer to clerk one year for a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals. (I graduated from law school last year.) I've immensely enjoyed the work, but it has been equally wonderful to be back in the area where many Bailey children grew up and spent their childhoods. In particular, it has been a treat to spend time with Kathleen Bailey, who lives out in Jenkintown and is coming up on retirement after a wonderful career serving students at Temple University. (Congratulations!)

Earlier this summer we checked in on the old Bailey family house in Rydal. I've included below several pictures of the house, which as you can see still stands magical as ever. In that spirit, I send my prayers, love, and affection to all of our family members living out on the West Coast, to Texas, Florida, the mid-Atlantic region, all the way up to Brooklyn, all the way down to Brazil (my sister Bridget!), and everyone in between. It's amazing it all started at that charming house.

I have also included a small bit of family history that pre-dates even that house: some time ago, I found a newspaper clipping announcing the marriage of none other than Miss Joan Regina Mulvihill and Edward Bradley Bailey. It appeared Sunday, January 6, 1924 on page 45 of the Pittsburgh Daily Post. I have attached a copy of that news clipping and typed up its words below.

But before we get to that, some thoughts for our prayers this month. On August 15, we celebrate the Assumption of Mary into heaven, fourth of the Glorious Mysteries, and I invite you all to meditate on those Mysteries as you pray. In addition to the Assumption, those are: (1) the Resurrection (John 20:1-29); (2) the Ascension (Luke 24:36-53); (3) the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41); and (5) the Coronation of Mary (Revelation 12:1).

Please pray for me and for all our family members -- those of us who remain here on Earth and those who have departed us.

With that, enjoy perusing the pictures of the old family house and this fun window into one of the first Mulvihill-Bailey family celebrations:

MULVIHILL-BAILEY
(Pittsburgh Daily Post, Sun., Jan. 6, 1924)

The marriage of Miss Joan Regina Mulvihill, daughter of James P. Mulvihill of this city, and Edward Bradley Bailey of Philadelphia took place Wednesday morning in Mr. Aloysius chapel at Cresson, Pa., Bishop John J. McCort of Altoona officiating. The bride wore a gown of white velvet with long sleeves and round neck. A cap of lace and orange blossoms held her tulle veil in place. She carried a prayer book with marker of lilies of the valley, suspended on white satin ribbon. Miss Ursula Mulvihill, as her sister's maid of honor, and Miss Agnes C. Bailey as bridesmaid, attended the bride. Miss Bailey wore yellow chiffon. They carried bouquets of orchids, sweetpeas and tea roses. Their hats were brown lace. Anthony K. Kasper of Philadelphia served as best man, and Ignatius J. Horstmann, nephew of the bride, was usher. A breakfast in the convent from where the bride was graduated followed the ceremony. Covers were laid for 40. Mr. Bailey and his bride will be at home in Philadelphia after February 1. Mr. and Mrs. Horstmann of Philadelphia, the latter a sister of the bride, and Miss Jean Barrett of Cleveland attended the wedding. long sleeve lace wedding gowns

Sure sounds like quite a time.

Sending you all my love and prayers ,
John
