negative retained earnings
What do you get when you take one of the most iconic Marathi plays, made famous by Dr. Sriram Lagoo, who is also most famously known for essaying that character, and make it into a Marathi film (with English subtitles), and give it life with two absolutely fantastic actors - Nana Patekar and Vikram Gokhale?
Answer: One of the most memorable films you could "ever" watch.
The story of an actor, who dominated the stage for 40 years earning the title Natsamrat (emperor of the a...ctors/theatre), who gives up all his worldly possessions to his children and his career to spend life with his family. The story of his attachment to his grand daughter. The story of his love for theatre, shakespeare and a liberal outlook that brought far ahead of its time. But most importantly the story of his social mistakes, arrogance, soft heart and humiliation from his otherwise largely well meaning children, and finally of him retaining his integrity and pride through all that.
It is a gut wrenching story, that Nana Patekar and Vikram Gokhale both pull you into. With acting so brilliant, it needs a star rating of its own. Ably supported by so many other actors. A special note for Medha Manjrekar who plays Nana Patekar's wife. This is creative drama at its very best translated to celluloid.
It surrounds you intense pathos through those three hours, and yet draws you in in a very human way with a very human appreciation of each of the characters. There are no positive and negative retained earnings characters. No heroes and villains. Just humans. In all their vulnerability. And you become one of them. And as the credits start rolling, there is a moment of stunned silence throughout the absolutely packed theatre, followed by a thunderous sound of claps of a standing ovation. The film has been running to continuously packed shows since Jan 1st and I had to book tickets a day in advance. This is one of the movies I will remember for ever. And it is one not to be missed. Not at all. A straight 5 on 5 rating.
PS: I just checked its box office performance. It collected about Rs. 66 crores in the first 8 days. Thats pretty creditable for a Hindi movie. For a marathi movie, it is absolutely astronomical.
