Happy Birthday today (Dec. 29) to Ray Thomas, best known as the flautist & as a singer & composer with UK progressive band The Moody Blues (1965 UK #1 single "Go Now" & 1968 UK #19 & 1972 US #2 single "nights in white satin chords In White Satin"); Ray's compositions for the band included "Another Morning" & "Twilight Time" from 'Days of Future Passed', "Legend of a Mind" from 'In Search of the Lost Chord' & "Lazy Day" from 'On the Threshold of a Dream'; as a solo artist, he released the albums 'F...rom Mighty Oaks' (1975) & 'Hopes Wishes & Dreams' (1976) after the band temporarily broke up in 1974; the Moodies reformed in 1978 but Ray's role began to decline through the '80s due to ill health & a more contemporary sound that downplayed the use of flute - he permanently retired at the end of 2002; in 2014, Ray revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer & became a spokesperson in support of regular testing for men; he is currently at work on a new solo album...
