pasta jokes
Ok so here's my deal with fat shaming/fatphobia.
You can have your own opinions about whether fatphobia is real, whether it's a genuine form of oppression, and whether there's anything objectively wrong with behavior under the umbrella of fat shaming. The logic behind the view that it's not real or wrong tends to be that fat people choose to be fat and if they hated being fat so much they would try harder to lose weight. Personally I think that logic is pretty flawed and myop...ic, but that's another topic of discussion.
I want to bring up a more personal point which is that fat shaming makes me feel kind of yucky and unsafe. When people I respect and care for say unkind things about fat people I feel alarmed because I have no idea how they form the categories of "fat people" versus "healthy people." As someone who has never exactly been either fat or skinny and someone whose weight fluctuates often I have to wonder how wide of a margin I have within my middle category. If I put on 15-20lbs because of a medication change or winter stress eating will I be the butt end of the next joke? Whose thinness am I being measured against and was it achieved through an ED or photo editing? Is this person judging me every time I mention my love of pasta jokes or cheese?
Before you call the politically correct feminazi police on me, just think about whether you've made an unsavory comment about a fat chick near a friend and then think about that person looking pained when their server came by to offer a dessert menu or going home and kneading their tummy fat for half an hour in front of a mirror. We can argue for days about the politics behind microagressions and free speech and whatnot, but even if we take microaggressions at face value they're just very yucky and unkind. Why would you want to be yucky and unkind? Please just don't.
P.S. If you're thinking about making an unsolicited observation about someone's body (INCLUDING WEIGHT LOSS), maybe think about not doing that again ever.
