After posting the picture of the Coast Guard passing our house yesterday I was reminded of another fire. In the mid 80's were making our approach to the rocky breakwater entrance to the harbor in somewhat rough conditions. I looked back and noticed some very bad smoke coming from the inboard engine hatch. Bill Wefer and I were at the lower helm while Ginger and Dawn were chatting above in the flybridge. Shutting off the motor would put us on the rocks. A fire extinguisher wou...ld probably stall the motor. Crap! I gave Bill the helm and dashed back and looked under the hatch and there was this orange flickering glow beneath the engine. Crap Crap! It was right under the fuel line to the motor. shit chat up lines! This was about 8 inches from the fuel tank. HOLY SHIT!
There was a several extinguishers in reach but also some Coors beer. I shook and sprayed beer on the fire. I looked up and the girls were chatting away and hadn't noticed. Bill being a trained firefighter was only miffed that we were now out of beer. Found out later that bilge pump switch must had shorted out after bouncing up and down too much in its old age. I couldn't figure out why the fuse didn't pop though.
