umbrella chords
One of my favorite musical moments of all time, preserved in this long lost music video from my high school graduation year, 1997. Sisters With Voices is still one of my fav musical groups of all time, and this is my favorite song from them. Also of note is that the song is based off the jazz bass solo recording by Jaco Pastorius called "Portrait of Tracy". When I began playing bass guitar in 2001, I purchased a Jaco Pastorius transcription book and learned how to play the... solo. The solo utilizes harmonics, high pitched overtones created by touching the strings instead of pushing them all the way to the fretboard in certain mathematical locations along the frets with the left hand while plucking with the right. Because of his huge hands and extra-ordinary dexterity, Jaco was able to play a bass line and pluck entire harmonic chords and melodic lines simultaneously, something previously unheard of on bass, albeit a fretless one at that! He revolutionized the bass world, to put it lightly. So the other favorite thing about "Rain" by SWV is that not only can you hear the bass line, you can also hear the original harmonic lines and chords in the track, something that most folks wouldn't expect to be played or even possible to be played on a bass. Even though producer Brian Morgan only used about the first four bars of Jaco's piece, just those four bars of Jaco's genius and SWV's talent really made this song. All that aside, I love the melody and chorus Morgan and the girls added in, just so soulful! And oh, Tyrese is in the video as a model just starting out in his career, featured dancing in the street with an umbrella chords. Upon revisiting the song, it seems that the song has a very spiritual undertone in the soulful similarity to Kirk Franklin's "Melodies from Heaven (Rain Down on Me)". Upon reading an interview of Brian Morgan, one of the most profound statements he makes with regard to his success is "the Universe keeps saying, "you belong here"." I found an instrumental version, so I'm giving this one a go with the sax.
